Day 23 – Ride Day Sixteen: Arcata to Humboldt Redwoods State Park

Today was a good morning, off the heels of a wonderful day in Arcata and a great sleep to suit. It also started with Michal and Sarah making us breakfast:  Eggs with Spinach and green Pepper and some toasted english muffins.

We left the church at about 8:30 am and took a few pictures before heading for the road. It was just before we left that Rev Sara said that if another ride goes through next year to let her know and she’d love to have them. That made us all quite happy, as she seemed to enjoy having us!
Talk about leaving on a great note.

Off we go! The first 30 miles flew by, Eureka – the closest town – was sketchy so no stopping there. We completely bypassed it and headed into the middle of nowhere. We luckily stopped and had lunch at a gem and gift shop that popped up randomly on the highway.

Today returned us to the redwoods as we departed Highway 101 in favour of Avenue of the Giants. This was slightly misleading at first though because there was not a real big tree to be seen, even after passing through a few patches of trees.
But after the first mile or two we started to encounter some MASSIVE trees, trees even bigger than the trees we saw just south of Cresecent City!

The wonderful sights were complemented by todays weather which was bright and sunny and felt about 70 degrees.

Because today flew by, we decided to take our journey through the redwoods at a more relaxed pace. In doing so we got to the site at about 2:30 despite having ridden 57 miles. We got there only to find out that our camp site was about 10 miles north and west of where we were… But we were informed that he could move our spot to the park we were currently at, so we did. Thank goodness!

Phoebe, Kiyo, Julie and I went for a “hike” through the forest and found some HUGE trees and lots of climb-able redwoods, and had a blast traversing them. We eventually made our way down to the river (Eel Creek) – which our ride had crossed and ridden along for so many miles today – where I dipped my feet in and then we all lay out on the rocky shore for a good old fashioned nap!

Tonight was back to the basics for Camp food: Hotdogs, and Sausages but also had a twist of some deliciously fresh Salad. As most nights have left us desiring a little more, some of the group went to get Smores materials and then we all proceeded to devour them.

A nice comfortable temperature and gorgeous surroundings led to a pleasant bed time

Ride: 56.92 Miles/91.07KM
Max: 35.6 MPH/56.96KMH
Odo: 678.8 Miles/1086.07KM
